President Sarkozy in Stockholm2009/07/03
French President Nicolas Sarkozy has visited Stockholm today for a meeting and a lunch with Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and myself. I also had an interesting meeting with foreign minister Bernard Kouchner and EU State Secretary Pierre Lellouche, who formed part of the delegation.
The Swedish presidency appreciates that the French president visited us already on our third day in office. Bilateral meetings with Member State governments are part of the day-to-day work for the presidency, and of great importance in order to find common ground in a number of key issues to be dealt with over the next six months.
During the lunch discussion, the President confirmed that France will give strong support to the Swedish presidency in a range of fields. For instance the work to get the rest of the world onboard a global climate deal, improving structures for financial market supervision and an ambitious follow-up to the Lisbon strategy for growth and jobs. We also agreed to co-chair the European presidency for the Union for the Mediterranean.
