COSAC meeting in the Riksdag2009/07/06
Today I have been taking part in the COSAC chairpersons meeting in the Swedish Riksdag. COSAC is a Conference of the committees of the national parliaments of the European Union Member States dealing with EU-affairs, as well as representatives of the European Parliament. I spoke about the priorities and challenges of the Presidency. I was asked a number of interesting questions on a whole range of issues, for example the enlargement, climate change, consumer rights, the Baltic Sea Strategy and energy security.
As for the role of national parliaments I believe they contribute to the good functioning of the EU. One very positive invention of the Lisbon Treaty is the new direct and active role given to the national parliaments in seeing to it that the principle of subsidiarity is respected.
Thus, if the Lisbon Treaty enters into force, the role of the national parliaments in EU decision making will be enhanced. This is an important step towards a more democratic EU. A stronger role for the national parliaments in the EU, bring the citizens closer to Europe.
