European Parliament visiting Stockholm2009/07/06
The European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents (the Speaker and all the group leaders) are visiting Stockholm today. After consultations with the Riksdag, EP leaders and the government will get together for a lunch and a work session. Similar meetings take place in the beginning of each new presidency term, as the presidency and Parliament need to coordinate their cooperation on legislative dossiers and other issues. However, this gathering will be of particular interest as several EP leaders are new in office.
Discussions on the re-appointment of Mr Barroso as Commission president will probably dominate today’s discussions. The Swedish presidency was assigned by the European Council in June to consult with group leaders on the timing for a parliamentary vote on Barroso. A vote in July seems now unlikely, but we hope that Parliament will be set to vote on its return from recess in September.
