Icelandic Parliament voted yes2009/07/17
After long discussions yersterday the Icelandic Parliament, the Althingi, voted yes to apply for membership in the European union. The proposal to start the EU accession process was passed with 33 votes to 28, with two abstentions. The intention is that the next General Affairs and External Relations Council, held on 27th of july, shall decide on asking the Commission to estimate the readiness of Iceland to start negotiations on membership.
We welcome that Iceland now has embarked on the journey towards membership. After negotiations on the EU-level, Iceland will hold a referendum.
