The new flu requires attention2009/07/20
It is increasingly clear that the new flu will require a large part of the attention from the EU and our Presidency during the autumn. We are accustomed to periodic bouts of flu but this is likely to affect a larger part of the population. The increase in sick leave from work may affect the recovery from the economic crisis. Professor Lars Jonung, inter alia, an advisor to the EU Commission, has in a worst case scenario calculated that growth in Europe could decrease by between 1.5 and 2.5 percent as a result of the flu.
Our health ministers gathered, however, already during the first week of the Swedish Presidency in order to exchange experiences and coordinate their actions to meet the new flu. The Presidency is now in close contact with the EU Commission as well as with WHO. An extraordinary Health Ministers´ meeting is also planned in autumn to discuss the new flu.
