Fruitful discussions with UK Minister2009/08/27
I have just come back from a fruitful meeting with the British Minister for Europe, Glenys Kinnock, who is visiting Stockholm today. Glenys is a former colleague from my time in the European Parliament.
It’s clear that the Swedish Presidency and Her Majesty’s government share a similar view on most of the issues that the European Union has to deal with in the near future. The climate issue is the most obvious example, where we agree on the vital importance of reaching a deal in Copenhagen in December.
A lot of work needs to be done before all parties will be able to agree, in particular as regards the issue of financing emission cuts in developing countries. Not much came out of the recent UN discussions in Bonn, and this makes it even more important that the upcoming meeting in Bangkok in late September will bring us a step forward towards a global deal.
